What to Expect at a Kids Hearing Test

A children’s hearing test at Trusted Hearing is a gentle and engaging process tailored to your child’s age and developmental stage.

Our experienced paediatric audiologists use evidence-based, age-appropriate techniques—such as Visual Reinforcement Orientation Audiometry (VROA) with animated toys or puppets for toddlers, Play Audiometry for preschoolers, and headphone-based testing for older children. These assessments are completely safe, non-invasive, and designed to feel more like a game than a test.

Early identification of hearing issues helps ensure your child receives the right support when it’s most beneficial. At Trusted Hearing, we create a calm, friendly environment where your child can feel relaxed and confident throughout the process.

1

Welcome and Introduction

We begin by warmly welcoming your child and explaining the session in a fun, age-appropriate way to help them feel relaxed and comfortable.

2

Parent Consultation

We speak with you about your child’s development, medical history, and any hearing or communication concerns you may have.

3

Otoscopy

A gentle check of your child’s ears is performed using a lighted instrument to ensure the ear canal and eardrum are healthy and clear of wax or infection.

4

Hearing Assessment

We use age-appropriate methods: VROA with puppets for ages 1–3, play-based testing for ages 3–5, and conventional pure tone audiometry for children over 5. Tympanometry and speech testing may also be included if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Trusted Hearing, we offer kids hearing tests for children aged 1 year and older. Our experienced audiologists use age-appropriate methods to ensure accurate results in a calm, child-friendly environment.

Children’s hearing tests include full-frequency hearing checks, tympanometry to assess middle ear function, and video otoscopy to visually inspect the ear canal and eardrum. For younger children, we use play-based methods such as Visually Reinforced Orientation Audiometry (VROA) or play audiometry to keep the process engaging.

Paediatric hearing test appointments are typically around 40 minutes. This allows enough time to establish trust with the child, complete all necessary tests, and discuss results with parents or guardians.

Our audiologists are highly trained in paediatric care and will do their best to engage your child. However, if a child is distressed or unwilling to participate and full results cannot be obtained, we reduce the fee to $100 to cover the time of the appointment only.

The standard fee for a paediatric hearing test is $150. This includes a full battery of tests tailored to your child’s age and needs.

Yes, all of our audiologists are trained and experienced in paediatric audiology. We have a purpose-built paediatric testing room designed to make young children feel safe and comfortable during the assessment.

Absolutely. If your child is having trouble with speech, language development, or learning at school, a hearing test can help rule out hearing issues. We can also provide reports for teachers, GPs, or specialists if required.

Yes, if your child has a valid Medicare card and a referral from a doctor, they may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of approximately $30 or $50 for older children. Referrals can come from a GP, paediatrician, ENT specialist, or another medical practitioner. The referral does not need to be specifically addressed to Trusted Hearing, and we can process the rebate for you at the time of your visit.

Common signs include delayed speech, not responding to their name, frequent ear infections, listening to the TV at high volume, or trouble following instructions. If you notice any of these, it’s a good idea to book a kids hearing test.
